Finding your feelings with a Sobriety Kit

When travelling to a new world, we never really know what we’ll find. That’s sort of what it’s like to find sobriety if you’ve spent your adult life in the netherland of substance abuse. One of the most powerful impacts on us from the journey is without a doubt the emergence of our raw feelings and emotions. They are natural triggers in a lot of ways and we need to be on maximum alert to be ready for the tidal wave of sensitivity that exposure to the world in a pure, unmedicated sense is like. Sounds scary at first but its only the beginning of a better, sometimes euphoric and always real ride of life that doing sober is always, always way better than it ever was drunk.

A Sobriety Kit or toolbox as its often called can be quintessential on the journey to this new land and successfully navigating to a more frequently ‘happy’ place vs being uncomfortable or triggered. Putting together those tools, organizing them according to scenarios and having practiced efficiency at application is an important part of the journey to the road to sobriety. This journey and the way to be successful on it will be the main topic of our conversation here for the next while.

It all starts with writing things down! We can’t stress enough the importance of this. If you’re not yet a writer and believe you have all your plans and to do’s efficiently organized in your mind, think again. A written plan is key to your journey. The very act of writing things down changes the way they register in your memory and cognitive structure of application.

The 5 STAGES OF CHANGE as a cognitive model towards changing destructive habits sets a stage that cannot almost always be applied to our journeys of change. Starting with PRECONTEMPLATION, REAL CONTEMPLATION, THEN PLANNING/PREPARATION, THEN ACTION AND FINALLY MAINTENANCE. Also often modeled as the 6 stages by including RELAPSE which is a definite learning step and one that puts back into the circle at step one.

So how does this all relate to finding ones feelings through sobriety? Well, you may just find love!! Really, you may not have heard it here first but you are hearing it again. If you’ve spent your entire adult life heavily under the influence, you will for the first time ever, experience your full range of emotions, without filter, without prejudice, in all their depth and as a fully actualized human being. How’s that for motivation to find sobriety or heck, to keep it running and celebrate how fricken awesome sober life is.
